By: Joyce J. Anders (as told to Rosalie E. L'Ecuyer)
In March 1959, Joyce and Lee Anders, their six children, and the Thomases, a family of four, traveled northward from sunny Monterey County, California, leaving security, relatives, friends, running water, electricity, and phone, for an unknown future homesteading in Alaska during Alaska's pivotal year when Alaska was transitioning from territory to the forty-ninth state. From her perspective as wife and mother in a family strongly bonded by unity and love, Joyce relives her family's story during their early, happy years in California, through their trials, sorrows, joys, misadventures, and humorous moments as they farmed in Two Rivers, a small community outside of Fairbanks, Alaska.
