So death has claimed your loved one. Of course you were not prepared for this separation. One never is. Your adjustment must come during the days ahead, after friends have gone to their homes and to their work. Alone, you must work out your own salvation. It is for these lonely days that I have written the following meditations, kin the hope that they may guide you progressively out of the vale of tears and into the heights of joy. Do not read the book at one sitting. Rather read one brief meditation each day. Carry its truth with you: think upon it, whatever your duties may be, wherever they may lead you. If only a little comfort comes to one who has suffered, I shall feel fully repaid for my effort in writing.
